About the World Expo

Dubai Expo

What is the Expo anyway?

The Expo is a major international world exhibition that was first organized by the United Kingdom and Ireland in 1851.

The purpose of the Expo is to bring together different countries that in turn exchange the latest ideas and innovations.

After the enormous success of the first Expo in London, more and more world exhibitions took place, so that sometimes there were several Expo’s in 1 year. To stop this abundant increase, the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions) was established in 1928.

This organization was responsible for ensuring that the frequency of the exhibitions was limited. The BIE also raised an eye on the content and value of the exhibition. Smaller exhibitions were therefore no longer allowed to use the name Expo.

How often does the Expo take place?

There is no set timetable for the world exhibitions. We can assume that an Expo takes place almost every year. But every Expo is not the same size.

You have registered exhibitions (called World Expos) and recognized exhibitions (called Specialized Expos). The specialized exhibitions are, as the name suggests, specialized in one subject.

The latest in Kazakhstan, for example, was a specialized Expo, the theme was about energy efficient and environmentally conscious. This Expo was therefore named Future Energy. The last major world exhibition (2015) took place in, Milan, Italy.

In the table below you can see the Expos of the past 10 years and the exhibitions that still have to take place, such as Dubai Expo 2020, which by the way is again a World Expo.

Dubai Expo 2020 is the 35th edition of the World Expo. In total there were 5 countries in the running to organize this edition, Turkey, Brazil, Russia, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.

Thailand was the first to be rejected on June 12, 2013 for the world exhibition. This is because the Thai government could not give certain guarantees for the event. In the following months, the remaining 4 countries were evaluated, starting with Russia in July 2013 and ending in UAE, October 2013. These were also the last two remaining countries after the evaluation.

The verdict finally fell on 27 November 2013 during a general meeting of BIE (Bureau International des Expositions). Of the 163 votes, Dubai in the UAE received no fewer than 116 votes in favor and only 47 against. With this it was certain that Dubai in the United Arab Emirates could organize the next and also 35th edition of the gigantic world exhibition.
